Edward FitzGerald’s birthday tomorrow

March 30, 2024

Tomorrow, 31st March 2024 will be the 215th anniversary of Edward FitzGerald’s birth in 1809.  It is also the 165th anniversary of the publication in 1859 of the first edition of his famous version of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.  We should all raise a glass and toast the memory of  a Victorian gentleman from Suffolk who gave the world a lasting legacy.  His verse still speaks to us today.

Come, fill the Cup, and in the Fire of Spring
The Winter Garment of Repentance fling:
The Bird of Time has but a little way
To fly—and Lo! the Bird is on the Wing.

Ah, Love, could thou and I with Fate conspire
To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire,
Would not we shatter it to bits — and then
Remold it nearer to the Heart’s Desire!

      Ah, YES…

      To seek God

      To find God

      To love God

      To serve God

Thank you, Sandra, mine too. In the 3rd and subsequent editions, ‘Him’ replaces ‘Fate’.
