March 31st is an auspicious date for Rubaiyat lovers

March 31, 2022

On March 31st, two very important things happened. On this day in the year 1809, Edward FitzGerald was born, and on the same day in 1859, the first edition of his great work, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, was published. So today is a day on which all of us who value the Rubaiyat should pause and be thankful for the existence and work of a great literary figure from Suffolk in the east of England. Please join us in raising a glass to the memory of Edward FitzGerald and all he gave us those many years ago. In this present year of much confusion, the words of Khayyam, as interpreted by FitzGerald, are as usual very apposite (F1 Q30).

What, without asking, hither hurried whence?

And, without asking, whither hurried hence !

Another and another Cup to drown

The Memory of this Impertinence !

    Dear Sandra
As an Iranian, I have always felt a great debt towards Edward Fitzgerald for making our beloved Hakim Omar Khayyam a worldwide name. At every opportunity I drive 100 miles to St Michael and all Angels church in Boulge, Woodbridge, I take a book of Rubaiyat with a bottle of red wine and drink it on the side of this great poet’s grave. Unfortunately Edward’s grave stone is sinking at the head and the rose bushes all gone except the one sent by another great man William Simpson. This one too gone very thin and frail. I have approached few charities in order to get the grave stone straightened but to no avail. Here is some pictures for you.
    Kind Regards
    Javad

Greetings, Marcello and Javad, on this special day, and many thanks for your comments. The comments on FitzGerald’s grave are particularly worrying – we haven’t been able to get over to Boulge for some years now. Unfortunately we can’t work out how to access your photos Javad. If you want to send them to us directly at sandrabill@omarkhayyamrubaiyat.com, we can post them as a separate item on the blog?

Ah, Love, could thou and I with Fate conspire
To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire,
Would not we shatter it to bits—and then
Re-mold it nearer to the Heart’s Desire!

with gratitude for FitzGerald and his Rubaiyat
