Another inlaid piece with a Khayyam-related theme

November 15, 2017

In an earlier post, reader Alan Birch wrote about a wooden tray and a plaque that he had found both of which had inlaid designs that were seemingly Khayyam-related.  See  He has now sent details of a further purchase of this type.

I have just bought a small folding table at auction. It was described as an asian inlaid table showing a couple under a tree. Below is a photo of the top. I think that it must be from the same area and of the same age as my tray and plaque.

If you look carefully you can see that the two people are sitting beneath a bough (of a grapevine).  There is what could be bread on the ground in front of them and the man is holding what could be a book of verse and a glass of wine.   The lack of background could indicate a wilderness.  Is this quatrain 11 of the first edition of FitzGerald?

If readers have other items of this kind, please send us details with a photo to post, so they can be compared with similar pieces.

I have a large frame/antique wood inlay piece of omar and khayyam and wanted to learn about it’s origins some more. I acquired the piece from my parents, who found it in 1980’s.

Have you seen the comment from Celeste on the later post on this theme? May be your piece comes from Mysore?
