The Great Omar on the Titanic

May 8, 2012

We have been reminded by another Rubaiyat enthusiast of the story of the Great Omar that went down in the Titanic in 1912.  The centenary of the sinking of the Titanic has just been celebrated widely, but the Great Omar has received little mention in the comment.  The story is highlighted in a documentary film about the 1987 expedition to rescue some treasures from the wreck and the film Treasures of the Titanic can still be viewed on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3T-SMS-3JI;  the Great Omar mention is from 0:48:36.  The full story of the creation and loss of the Great Omar, and the subsequent two re-creations is told in Robert J. Shepherd, Lost on the “Titanic” (London: Shepherds, Sangorski et al, 2001).  As some readers will know, the third version of this magnificent volume is now in the British Library in London, and was on show at the time of the Rubaiyat exhibition there in 2009-10.
